# Nearshore software development company in Poland

The usual risks of offshore are a different time zone, unclear code ownership and data outside the EU. Since November 2023, our engineers have worked in the Oslo team of Skyfri's energy management system, next to the client's own people.

## Nearshore vs offshore vs onshore: what is the difference?

Nearshore software development means hiring a team in a nearby country that works in a similar time zone. Software outsourcing is usually described by distance:

- Nearshore: a team close by, so you share a working day.
- Offshore: a team far away, with a large time difference.
- Onshore: a team in your own country.

We are a nearshore partner. Poland is in the CET/CEST zone: the same hour as Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Scandinavia, and one hour ahead of the UK. The whole working day overlaps with your team. Poland is also in the EU, and we process data within the EU (strictly, the European Economic Area).

## Dedicated development team, team extension or a full project

Pick the model by how much of the delivery you want to run yourself.

### Dedicated software development team

Choose it when you want to hire dedicated developers for a product that keeps evolving: the same core of people works on it for the long term.

### Team extension

Our engineers join your team and work in your tools and your Scrum process, next to your own people. This model is also called staff augmentation. [Skyfri](https://ordergroup.co/case-studies/skyfri-solar-asset-management-platform/) in Oslo works this way.

### Project end to end

We build the whole project with our own team, and you follow progress through sprint demos. [Monetor](https://ordergroup.co/case-studies/monetor-currency-risk-management-software/) in Stavanger is an example.

## How our engineers work inside your team

### Your tools

We work in your tools when you want that. For Kyoto Group it was Slack and the client's Jira. For Skyfri it is MS Teams, Outlook with accounts in the client's domain, Slack and the client's Jira.

[Scrum and sprints

Kyoto Group ran two-week sprints with regular retrospectives. At Skyfri we hold shared status meetings, retrospectives and Big Room Planning, a planning event we run together with the client. Every sprint ends with a release and a demo, and daily meetings, code review, peer review and documentation run all the way through.](https://ordergroup.co/company/about-us/our-approach/)

### In person at the start

We meet on site when a project begins: Kyoto Group at the start of the project, BizBot at workshops in Warsaw, Oslo and Istanbul.

### Roles

On our side you have a Project Tech Leader, a Project Manager or Scrum Master, and a Business Owner. You can take the Product Owner role yourself.

### Time reports

You get a report of the time worked every month, as Kyoto Group and Skyfri do.

### Kick-off and data access

At the start we hold a kick-off with you and enter the project in our GDPR registers. Whenever the team changes, we update who has access to your data.

## Nearshore software development for UK companies

For a team in the UK, Poland is one hour ahead, so stand-ups, demos and planning fit into the same hours.

A UK client gets a data processing agreement (DPA) for each project, based on Article 28(3) GDPR. You are the controller and we are the processor. Code ownership works the same for every client: the economic rights pass to you with every payment, and you receive the source code.

## Nearshore software development for DACH and the Nordics

For teams in Germany, Austria and Switzerland there is no time difference, and the same goes for Scandinavia. Each project has an entry in our record of categories of processing activities (Article 30(2) GDPR).

Four of our nearshore projects are in Norway. [Skyfri](https://ordergroup.co/case-studies/skyfri-solar-asset-management-platform/)'s [energy management system](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/ems/) (EMS) steers 7 plants, with more than 5 MWh of storage and more than 4 MW of battery power. Our collaboration started in November 2023 with a technical audit, followed by Big Room Planning with the client in Oslo. We work in time and material and Scrum, and the same core of our engineers has been on the project since 2024.

[Kyoto Group](https://ordergroup.co/case-studies/kyoto-digital-twin-software/)'s product development ran from January to December 2024 in the same model. In Oslo, [BizBot](https://ordergroup.co/case-studies/bizbot-fintech-ux-design/)'s platform got a new UX and UI, 400 screens in total, with workshops in Warsaw, Oslo and Istanbul. And [Monetor](https://ordergroup.co/case-studies/monetor-currency-risk-management-software/), in Stavanger, is a web application we built end to end, in Scrum, on AWS.

## EU data, GDPR and code ownership

### Your data stays in the EU

Production usually runs in your own cloud account, in the EU region you choose, and the test environments we host ourselves run on servers in Poland. Access goes through named accounts, AWS IAM Identity Center and the principle of least privilege, and disks are encrypted.

### Incidents and the end of the contract

We tell you about an incident within 24 hours and help with a supervisory authority inspection within 2 business days. After the contract ends we delete or return your data within 10 business days and confirm it in writing within 7. Our GDPR documents were prepared with a law firm acting as data protection officer and approved by the management board, and we review our procedures every 12 months.

[You own the code

The economic rights (copyright) to the code pass to you with every payment, for the purposes defined in the contract, and you receive the source code. The working repository stays in our controlled environment. We agree the SLA with each client in the contract, and support right after launch (hypercare) is possible, with its scope and length agreed before the start.](https://ordergroup.co/company/security/)

## Nearshore software development: frequently asked questions

### Tell us about your product and we will suggest one.

### What is a nearshore software development company?

A nearshore software development company builds software for clients in nearby countries from a similar time zone. We are a nearshore company: we work from Warsaw, in the same hour as Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Scandinavia and one hour ahead of the UK, inside the EU.

### Why choose a software development company in Poland for nearshore work?

Poland is in the EU and in the CET/CEST time zone, so our engineers work in your hours and your data stays in the EU. Every project gets its own DPA. Skyfri in Oslo is one example: our engineers have worked in its team since November 2023.

### What is the difference between a dedicated development team and team extension?

A dedicated team is a long-term team with the same core of people. In team extension, also called staff augmentation, our engineers work inside your team, in your tools and your Scrum process. A third model is a project end to end, where we build the whole scope with our own team. We agree the model with you before the start.

### How do you work with teams in the UK and in the DACH region?

There is no time difference with Germany, Austria and Switzerland and one hour with the UK, so stand-ups, demos and planning happen in shared hours. Every project has its own DPA based on Article 28(3) GDPR and an entry in our record of processing activities.

### Who owns the code you write for us?

You do. The economic rights (copyright) to the code pass to you with every payment, for the purposes defined in the contract, and you receive the source code. The working repository stays in our controlled environment.

### How do you handle GDPR when you process our data?

We are the processor and you are the controller, with a separate DPA for every project. We tell you about an incident within 24 hours, and after the contract ends we delete or return your data within 10 business days.

### How much does a dedicated development team cost, and how do we start?

We bill in time and material by default, the minimum project budget is 25,000 EUR, and a fixed price is possible for a closed scope. A working MVP usually takes about 3 months. The first step is a free [discovery workshop](https://ordergroup.co/services/consulting-discovery/product-workshops/).

### Can your developers work in our tools and our Scrum process?

Yes. We work in your tools, such as Slack, Jira or MS Teams, and inside your Scrum process, as we do at Kyoto Group and Skyfri.
