The brief

Karol Oponowicz, co-founder of Order Group and at the time CEO of zeronest, explains how a virtual power plant combines wind turbines, solar panels and energy storage into one system, and why asset owners can get paid for turning off production when demand is low.

## How do a VPP, an EMS and a BMS work together?

A virtual power plant coordinates many sites, an EMS controls the devices at each site, and a BMS keeps each battery within its safe limits.

In this episode of our series *Everything in Order*, [Karol Oponowicz](https://ordergroup.co/experts/karol-oponowicz/), co-founder of Order Group and at the time CEO of [zeronest](https://www.zeronest.energy/), talks about virtual power plants (VPPs): how they optimize energy generation and consumption, and how they integrate sources such as wind turbines and solar panels to serve individual users and businesses on a national scale.

A VPP compares energy prices, production and storage to prevent waste and save money. Karol points to the benefits, such as payments for turning off production during periods of low demand, and the efficiency of a well-managed system.

The conversation also covers energy management systems (EMS), which oversee energy generation and consumption, and battery management systems (BMS), which keep each battery within its safe limits. Karol describes how these systems are developed and deployed in partnership with companies such as [Skyfri](https://ordergroup.co/case-studies/skyfri-solar-asset-management-platform/) and [Kyoto](https://ordergroup.co/case-studies/kyoto-digital-twin-software/). Both projects are part of our [Energy Hub](https://ordergroup.co/energy-hub/) work.

### EMS vs BMS at a glance

How an energy management system and a battery management system divide the work on one site.

| Aspect | EMS (energy management system) | BMS (battery management system) |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | The whole site: battery, solar plant and grid connection | The cells inside one battery |
| Main job | Decides what the site does and oversees energy generation and consumption | Protects the cells and keeps the battery within its safe limits |
| What it works with | Generation, consumption and the battery as one asset | Cell voltages and temperatures, cell balancing, disconnecting the pack |
| How they connect | Treats the BMS limits as hard constraints | Reports the limits the EMS must respect |

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a virtual power plant?

A [virtual power plant (VPP)](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/vpp/) is a network of distributed energy resources, such as solar systems, batteries and flexible loads, coordinated by a central control system so they can be operated and traded as one unit. Each asset alone is too small to trade on a power exchange, so software connects many of them across different sites.

### How does a virtual power plant save or earn money?

Owners of the connected assets save money and get paid for flexibility. The VPP compares prices, production and storage and decides when to use, store or sell power, so less energy is wasted. Asset owners can also get paid to switch off production when demand is low or to cut consumption during a demand response call.

### What is the difference between an EMS and a BMS?

An EMS runs the whole site, while a BMS protects the cells inside one battery. The [battery management system (BMS)](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/bms/) measures voltages and temperatures, balances cells and disconnects the pack when a limit is crossed. The [energy management system (EMS)](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/ems/) decides what the site does with that battery, the solar plant and the grid connection, and treats the BMS limits as hard constraints.

### How does a virtual power plant work, and what software does it need?

A virtual power plant runs on a VPP platform that works in four steps.

- It groups assets into units that match a market product.
- It forecasts their normal use and output.
- It sends power targets to each site.
- It settles what was delivered.

Each site needs an EMS to carry out those targets, plus an integration layer for every device model. Safety limits stay at the site, out of reach of central commands.

### How do you choose VPP software?

Start from the layers your portfolio is missing. VPP software is built in layers: site control (EMS), aggregation, settlement and reporting, market orchestration and grid operator commands. Check which of them your current systems already cover, which markets you bid into, and which layers a vendor runs in production rather than in development. Our page on [VPP and demand response software development](https://ordergroup.co/energy-hub/virtual-power-plant-software/) describes each layer.
