# Industrial IoT services and device software

The energy management system (EMS) we built for Skyfri controlled the batteries on 7 plants and was designed to keep doing it offline. Most of our IoT work looks like that: software on a site's controller that steers hardware from many manufacturers, with the cloud for reporting and updates.

## What we do: IoT development services from the device to the cloud to the app

### On the site controller and the device

Control logic that runs next to the hardware and keeps working offline: the Skyfri EMS, written in Python with asyncio on Azure IoT Edge, and the software on the controller next to Global Green's batteries. On Android devices, we built RAW OS for RAW Cyber.

### Device connectivity

We connect hardware through its own protocols and SDKs: Modbus over RS485, MQTT with TLS 1.2, LTE, TCP/IP, NFC tags, iBeacons and the Datalogic and Zebra scanner SDKs.

### Cloud

Device data reaches the cloud through Azure IoT Hub (Skyfri) or AWS IoT Core (Zeronest). For Global Green we run a device simulator in AWS, so control logic is tested before it touches a battery on site.

### IoT application development

The apps people work with on top of the hardware: the Zeronest installer app, the guard tour mobile app that works offline, the admin panel of the scanner app, Mudita's App Store and Developer Portal, and the SCADA-based system with a digital twin for KYOTO.

## Industrial IoT solutions for energy sites: edge and cloud

Most of our industrial IoT software development happens where the hardware is expensive and decisions cannot wait: battery storage and solar sites. The software runs on a controller at the site, reads batteries and inverters over Modbus, decides what the storage should do and reports to the cloud over MQTT or Azure IoT Hub. The energy side of this work, from the energy management system (EMS) to trading and flexibility, is covered on our [Energy Hub](https://ordergroup.co/energy-hub/).

### IIoT solutions we have built for energy

- [Skyfri](https://ordergroup.co/case-studies/skyfri-solar-asset-management-platform/): the [EMS](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/ems/) behind a portfolio of solar and battery sites. It decides when batteries charge and discharge, runs [peak shaving](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/peak-shaving/) and energy trading, responds to requests from the distribution system operator and keeps exports under the grid connection limit. It was designed to run fully offline and reaches the cloud through Azure IoT Edge and Azure IoT Hub. From June 2024 it ran across 7 plants and controlled more than 5 MWh of storage capacity and more than 4 MW of battery power.
- [Zeronest](https://ordergroup.co/case-studies/zeronest-solar-panel-monitoring-app/): an EMS platform for home solar and storage that we have built since January 2024. It works with 16 inverter brands through a device wired to each inverter over RS485 and [Modbus](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/modbus/). The device reports over LTE and talks to AWS IoT Core over MQTT and TLS 1.2, and client data stays in the EU. Every minute the system decides whether a home battery charges, discharges or sells to the grid. As of April 2026 it served more than 3,000 prosumer storage installations.
- Global Green: a PV and battery storage operator in Germany and Canada. Since December 2025 we have built the software on the controller next to its batteries and in the cloud, including aFRR ([automatic frequency restoration reserve](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/afrr/)) balancing, a trading controller and commands from the distribution system operator, across 15 MWh of storage. We map Modbus registers for batteries from two manufacturers and run a device simulator in AWS, so control logic is tested before it touches storage on a site.
- [KYOTO](https://ordergroup.co/case-studies/kyoto-digital-twin-software/): three and a half years of industrial IoT and digital twin work for Kyoto Group's [thermal energy storage](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/thermal-energy-storage/). We took a UX/UI MVP to a [SCADA](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/scada/)-based system that monitors and controls the flow of energy in real time, with a [digital twin](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/digital-twin/) layer for weather data, energy price analysis and plant performance simulation. Kyoto Group raised NOK 183.3 million in private placements in the first half of 2021, with a prototype our software supported.

More project detail is in our [industrial IoT examples](https://ordergroup.co/blog/industrial-iot-examples/), and the terms are explained in our [IoT glossary](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/iot/).

Offline by design

## Why control stays on the site

Charging, discharging or capping exports at the grid limit cannot wait for a link that may be down, so control runs on the site's own controller.

The Skyfri EMS was designed to run without a connection. Zeronest's device reports over LTE, independent of the inverter maker's cloud and home Wi-Fi.

## IoT development for field hardware: NFC, beacons, scanners

Custom IoT development for field hardware connects the devices people carry or install on site to the apps and back-office systems that depend on them. The hard part is usually the conditions in the field: a site with no signal, or a scanner that must not lose a scanning session.

### Checkpoints read by QR codes, NFC tags and beacons

Since 2021 we have built a client's SaaS platform for guard tours. Guards confirm checkpoints by scanning QR codes, NFC tags or iBeacons. The platform integrates tracking devices over TCP/IP, and the mobile app keeps working offline and syncs when it reconnects. Its clients operate in Poland, South Africa and Australia.

### Apps for industrial scanners

For another client we build an Android app for industrial handheld terminals. It integrates the scanner SDKs from Datalogic and Zebra, buffers scanning sessions when the network drops, syncs them to a backend and gives the office an admin panel.

### Earlier projects: airport systems with AP-TECH

Among our earlier projects are two airport systems built with our partner AP-TECH. [Monster](https://ordergroup.co/case-studies/monster-airport-lighting-system/) manages airport lighting and replaced the airport's legacy software. Each light's controller has its own IoT module, air traffic controllers set the direction and brightness of each light, and a Django dashboard sends alerts by role. [ATOS](https://ordergroup.co/case-studies/atos-airport-management-software/) combines data from induction loops and transponders into the real-time position of aircraft and airport vehicles. It was built for CAT III B operations, which run in very low visibility.

For device makers

## Android device platforms: OS, app store, OTA

### Operating system and device security

For [RAW Cyber](https://ordergroup.co/case-studies/raw-cyber-custom-android-os/) we built RAW OS on the [Android Open Source Project](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/aosp/), hardened with CopperheadOS. The phone was wiped when its SIM card was removed, and [packet inspection](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/deep-packet-inspection/) with nDPI blocked malware. We finished its move to Android 11 in September 2021.

### App store and OTA updates

For Mudita we build the App Store, the Developer Portal and the [OTA](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/ota-update/) platform for its phone; in 2026 the second OTA stage adds incremental updates and staged rollouts. For RAW Cyber we built the RAW Store, with only pre-approved apps. More on this work: [custom Android OS development](https://ordergroup.co/iot-software-development/custom-android-os-development/).

### Provisioning and device management

For RAW Cyber we also built the [device management](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/mdm/) admin panel that tracked devices, published builds and kept the fleet and the store in sync. Later OTA builds of RAW OS were issued at the client's request.

## Why teams build IoT software with us

### IoT consulting services: a free discovery workshop

Our IoT consulting starts with a free discovery workshop: we map the hardware and who makes it, the protocols it speaks, what has to keep working offline, how updates reach the device and where the security boundaries sit. On Skyfri, a Technical Feasibility Study in November 2023 came before the build, and the EMS went into production in June 2024.

### Long-term support

Hardware stays in the field for years, and the software around it has to follow new device models and new Android versions. The guard tour platform has been in development since 2021 and Zeronest's platform since January 2024. On RAW Cyber, keeping RAW OS in step with Copperhead's releases and new hardware was a workstream of its own.

### What do your industrial IoT services include?

Our IIoT services cover the software between field hardware and the people who run it: control logic on a site's controller, integration with batteries and inverters over Modbus and MQTT, cloud platforms and dashboards, SCADA and digital twins. Most of it runs on battery storage and solar sites, for Skyfri, Zeronest, Global Green and KYOTO. We also connect field hardware such as NFC tags, beacons and scanners, and build Android systems, app stores and OTA updates for devices.

### Can industrial IoT software keep running when the internet connection drops?

Yes, if the control logic lives on the site's controller rather than in the cloud. The EMS we built for Skyfri was designed that way and can run fully offline. In the field, the guard tour app and the scanner app we build keep working offline and sync when they reconnect.

### Can you connect new software to hardware we already have, from different manufacturers?

Yes. The Zeronest platform works with 16 inverter brands, for Global Green we map Modbus registers for batteries from two manufacturers, and the Skyfri EMS controlled batteries and inverters from several manufacturers.

### Do you write firmware for microcontrollers?

No. We write the software that runs on a site's controller, on Android devices and in the cloud, and we integrate hardware through its protocols and SDKs: Modbus, MQTT, NFC, beacons and scanner SDKs. We do not write microcontroller firmware, embedded Linux or BLE code; circuit board design goes to a hardware partner.

### What technologies do you work with?

Python with asyncio, Azure IoT Edge and Azure IoT Hub on the edge (Skyfri). Modbus over RS485, MQTT and TLS 1.2 behind AWS IoT Core (Zeronest). Modbus, MQTT and a device simulator in AWS (Global Green). QR codes, NFC tags, iBeacons and devices over TCP/IP (guard tours), and the Datalogic and Zebra scanner SDKs. Android and [AOSP](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/aosp/) with CopperheadOS and nDPI (RAW Cyber), and Django dashboards (Monster).

### Do you work on Android operating systems for devices?

Yes. For RAW Cyber we built RAW OS, a custom Android-based operating system hardened with CopperheadOS, with its own app store, device provisioning and management, a wipe when the SIM is removed and [packet inspection](https://ordergroup.co/glossary/deep-packet-inspection/) with nDPI. For Mudita we build the App Store, the Developer Portal and the OTA platform around its phone, not the operating system.

### Can you build an app store or OTA updates for our device?

Yes. We build the App Store, Developer Portal and OTA platform for Mudita's phone, including incremental updates with a full package as the fallback and staged rollouts. For RAW Cyber we built the RAW Store, with only pre-approved apps, and issued OTA builds for RAW OS.

### Do you support device software long-term?

Yes. The guard tour platform has been in development since 2021 and Zeronest's platform since January 2024. On RAW Cyber, keeping RAW OS current was a workstream of its own, and we finished moving it to Android 11 in September 2021. For Mudita we are still building the App Store, the Developer Portal and the second stage of the OTA platform.

### How much does IoT software development cost and how long does it take?

The estimate and the timeline come out of the free discovery workshop, once the hardware, the software around it and the risks are mapped, so we do not quote price ranges up front. Two examples from our projects: on Skyfri, a Technical Feasibility Study in November 2023 was followed by an EMS in production in June 2024. Our work for KYOTO ran for three and a half years.

### How do we start?

With a free discovery workshop. We map the hardware, whether it is a device or equipment on a site, the software around it and the risks. Then you get a plan and an estimate for the build, the rollout and long-term support after launch. Book the workshop and we'll scope it with you.
